Prayerful Meditation – Listening for the voice of God
Center yourself. Gently close your eyes; breathe in through your nose and down to your belly . Follow your breath back out and through your mouth. Do this several times.
Notice the quiet descending on your body, the restful nature enveloping you.
Welcome it.
When thoughts flitter through your mind, gently let them float away and return to the quiet.
The voice of God is not in your thoughts. . .
Listen to the quiet . . . . .
When memories of events threaten to take over your thoughts, gently let them slide away and return to the quiet.
The voice of God is not in the strength of these events . . .
Listen to the quiet . . . .
When the ground beneath you shakes and trembles, gently lay aside the feelings of fear and terror to return to the quiet.
The voice of God is not in the trembling earth . . .
Listen to the quiet . . .
Listen . . . .
Listen . . . .
Allow the silence of God to come from the center,
to spread over all your being,
to enfold you in peace, in love, in joy.
Welcome the silence of God’s voice as it resounds within you.
Let it teach you the ways of God,
and not the ways you think God should be.
Allow yourself to sit in the silence
and listen to the quiet. . . .
Feel your body in the chair, your feet connecting with the ground and when you are ready, open your eyes as you still remain open to the silence. Amen
This meditation is based on Psalm 29:1-11 – A Psalm of David
1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,[a]
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
worship the Lord in holy splendor.
3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over mighty waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl,[b]
and strips the forest bare;
and in his temple all say, “Glory!”
10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
11 May the Lord give strength to his people!
May the Lord bless his people with peace!
